A very belated July empties! Or, “here, look at my bag full of garbage”

August is almost over, really?! Sorry this post is so late guys, but over the past few weeks I’ve been going nuts trying to seize, enjoy, and hold onto the last days of summer. I’m pleased to say that the summer of 2012 was gloriously lazy, relaxed, full of joy, and went by entirely too quickly. But moving on, back to school and back to regular posting with this blog!

I emptied out a lot of stuff in July! Of course, I still have plenty filling my drawers and cabinets, but progress is progress, no matter how small or slow.

A Sephora bag full of empty stuff. Not bad, not bad.

  • Freeman Papaya and Mango Moisture Shampoo: smells nice, but it actually was very drying on my hair.
  • Philosophy Happy Birthday Beautiful! 3-in-1: got this free from Sephora for my birthday last year, and it smells delish! Not unique enough to purchase, though.
  • Julep the Besst Pedi Creme Ever: Smelled nice, made my feet look nice, but this tiny tube is not worth the $22 that I would have to pay to get it. Thank goodness it came in my penny box.
  • Up & Up Strawberry Tangerine Shave Cream: very inexpensive, gets the job done well.
  • Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub in Hawaiian Kukui: Best. Scrub. Ever. Plus, this mondo tub is only around $7, so it’s definitely very affordable.
  • Aussie Deeeeep Conditioner: love this. Smells amazing, makes my hair super soft, annihilates all tangles, and is only $3 at my local Target.

  • Dove Deodorant: I liked the scent okay, but since I am a champ at sweating, I really do need to purchase the clinical strength next go around.
  • Tresemme Split Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner: I really liked these a lot. They smell nice and worked wonders on my damaged hair that hasn’t been cut in over a year.
  • Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant: Expensive as a mug, made my skin so, so angry. My face hates this.
  • Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash: As I just mentioned, Dermalogica makes my skin so mad. Avoiding forever.
  • Elizabeth Arden All Gone Eye and Lip Makeup Remover: worked just fine, but it was pretty oily/greasy.
  • Clean and Clear Deep Cleaning Astringent: Burned like a mother.

  • Dr. Jart Water Fuse BB Cream: I liked this a lot!
  • Kerastase Elixer Ultime: This smells amazing. Like heaven. Also, it made my hair look awesome.
  • Ojon Volumizing Shampoo: Not bad, I do have full sizes of the shampoo and conditioner sitting around so I can give the system a go.
  • Simple Skincare Cleansing Face Wipes: I don’t like these as much as the Willa brand, but I do like these a lot.
  • Pantene Conditioner: Just your average drugstore conditioner. Not terrible, but not outstanding either.
  • Nivea Extended Moisture Lotion: This made my skin super soft, but did have a bit of an interesting smell.

  • Julep Facial for Hands Glycolic Hand Scrub: Honestly, I feel like I don’t get to say anything about this. I got one use out of this, and one use isn’t enough to make any solid claims about a product.
  • N4 Super Comb Prep and Protect: This is the best detangling spray ever, hands down. It smells kind of like fruity pebbles (yummo!) and my comb would just glide through my hair like butter. The only downside? The $32 price tag for one bottle.
  • Kroger Cotton Rounds: And…they’re cheap little cotton circles. They work just fine!
  • Neutrogena Body Clear Body Scrub: El hubs was the one that used most of this, but I did use it from time to time if I noticed any acne on my arms. I’ll say, it seemed to clear things up right quick!

TOTAL EMPTY COUNT: 22 items

HECK YEAH!

Bzz Campaign: BIC Soleil Savvy!

Razors aren’t something I usually get super duper stoked about, but they’re a necessity for me (and most other ladies out there!). Disposable razors take up a lot of space in my already cramped bathroom setup, but they are definitely the cheaper option. I like the space-saving and waste-reducing benefits of refillable razors, but holy moly! Some are expensive.

Enter the beautiful, glittery little mix between: the BIC Soleil Savvy.

The BIC Soleil Savvy is the perfect mix, with the convenience of both kinds of razors! Check it out, it’s definitely worth it. You get a razor, refills for less than $10, and this razor gives you a nice clean shave that doesn’t leave any irritation.

DISCLAIMER: I received this product free of charge for promotional purposes. All opinions are 100% honest and my own.

BzzAgent! The Dark Monk

I joined BzzAgent awhile back, and not too long ago, I got my first assignment: to read and review The Dark MonkFor those of you who don’t know what BzzAgent is, basically you sign up, you take a bunch of surveys to give them an idea of who you are and what kind of lifestyle you have, and then based on that and your BzzAgent score, you can be selected to participate in promotional campaigns free of charge!

So, I was one of the lucky ones who got not only The Dark Monk but it’s predecessor as well, The Hangman’s Daughter (both by Oliver Potzsch) for free of charge, sent straight to my Kindle! Here’s my take on both books.

The Hangman’s Daughter: I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a sucker for a good piece of historical fiction. This novel follows Jakob, the executioner blessed with intelligence and a heart in a small village in 1600s Bavaria. The book focuses around a series of murders that occur in this small town, for which the midwife is blamed, with those pointing fingers citing witchcraft as the cause. With help from his daughter and her love, the son of a local doctor, Jakob sets out to solve the murders. While this did move a little slow at times, it was still interesting. The action scenes I found to be particularly troublesome, and I found them all blurring together (along with the villains). While I did end up skimming portions of this book, I can’t say that it was a bad read.

The Dark Monk: This story picks back up with Jakob, his daughter and her suitor, as they investigate the death of a parish priest who dies mysteriously after carving a symbol into a gravestone.  Set within the same historical backdrop, this doesn’t disappoint either. There was a lot of buzz surrounding this book, and I can see why. It might be the teeniest bit overhyped, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. I felt like the characters were a lot more fleshed out in this work than the previous one.

Go forth and read, lovelies!

DISCLAIMER: These two novels were sent, free of charge, to my Kindle for promotional consideration. This does not influence my opinion at all, and these reviews are 100% unbiased accounts.

Love It: Fresh Seaberry Restorative Body Cream hits all the right notes

Friday I did get a couple of pictures taken, but soon it got too hot to stick around (the contractor cut off the AC), so I fled to campus to escape the heat and to upload photos and work on this here blog. Like a dum dum, I totally forgot the cable I needed to transer, and I’ve just located it now! Since I’ve been in a grouchy mood lately, I decided that maybe talking about something that I really like would help me get past that.

First up in this series is the Fresh Seaberry Restorative Body Cream.

I love this stuff. I really, really do. I initially picked it up at Sephora on a whim after finding it by the cash wrap after taking a sniff. I thought it smelled nice, so I figured why not? Oh, am I pleased that I did pick it up!

It smells heavenly. Divine. Amazing! It has a very clean, earthy, and herbal scent that’s very fresh (heh) and while it is very fragrant, I don’t find it overpowering at all. For me, this particular smell brings back good memories that are tied to when my family visited the Herb Farm in Fredericksburg, TX. This reminds me of what their shop smelled like, and it is definitely a very pleasant scent.

This is definitely thicker than your standard lotion, but it doesn’t have the thickness of most body creams that make them difficult to work with at times. It’s a nice balance in between the two extremes. It gets soaked up hella fast by my skin, and it leaves me feeling soft and moisturized. Here’s another plus in my book: you know how some lotions can feel sticky, almost a bit tacky, on the skin? This totally isn’t one of those guys!

Here’s the only downer part about this: see that tiny little bottle up there? That thing costs $10. A full size, which isn’t crazy huge at 8.12 oz, costs $28.50, so it definitely is a major splurge. In order to avoid having to buy this all the time, I’ve limited myself to using it as a hand cream. It’s particularly awesome at night, since the soothing scent helps you drift off, and you wake up in the morning with soft hands.

All in all, this is a fantastic body cream. I wish I could slather my entire body in it everyday because it smells and feels absolutely amazing, but in order to justify the high cost, it’ll have to do as a hand cream.

Available at Sephora, $10 for 2.4 oz and $28.50 for 8.12 oz.

Oh, weekend! You go by so quickly! *shakes fist* So it goes, though. Tomorrow it’s back to housework and schoolwork, and lots of watching My Little Pony. What about you guys? Do anything fun this weekend? What’s coming up this week for you?

Love It or Loathe it, comin’ up next!

Tomorrow I’m going to be stuck upstairs all day while we have our apartment’s maintenance guys come in to fix the floor in our kitchen. There was a massive leak that had been going on for months, maybe even starting before we moved in, and the linoleum and the wood is all damaged. So, they’re going to have to tear up the old flooring, replace any wood that was damaged, and then put down new linoleum. Whew! This is probably going to take awhile, and all of the stuff is in our kitchen will be moved into the living room. So, I’ll be spending all day upstairs with the cats, watching Netflix, and working on this blog!

So…

I’m hoping to get some product reviews up, and I’m going to be starting a new series called Love It or Loathe It. The majority of items I’ve purchased haven’t really left a lasting impression on me, but some have left me either head over heels in love with them OR wanting to kill them with fire, and those are the items that are going to be featured in this series!

Which leads me to this: which would you, my darling, lovely reader, like to see first? The products that I only want to send to my worst enemies or the ones I want to marry and have tiny beautiful babies with?

Let me know, and these are the products I’ll start with!

P.S. One more day until the weekend, woot woot!!

Project 50 Pan Update

Seriously, are we really almost done with the third week of June?! Time has been flying by crazy, crazy fast, and it kind of came as a shock to me that we’re already so far into the month.

I figured since we’re a little halfway done with the month, a project pan update was in order. So far, I’ve used up 10 out of 50 items on my project pan list, along with a few little things (mostly packets) that got finished up. Also, as of today, it’s been 23 days since I’ve bought any makeup or beauty products! Last time I attempted a no-buy, 23 days is the most I made it–it was where I failed last time. Send me some good vibes and strength via the interwebs; there have been lots of temptations this month, and there’s one big beautiful temptation in the form of the fall Allure Beauty Box coming up. July Birchbox

According to my tracking information, I wasn’t supposed to get my Birchbox for another couple of days. When I went down to check the mail today, I was super surprised to see my July Birchbox waiting for me!

This month, Birchbox teamed up with Glamour to curate a box that was centered around the five senses, and here it is!

Here’s what I got in this month’s box.

Alterna Bamboo UV+ Color Protection Fade-Proof Fluide: This is a gloss that’s meant to protect your hair from the UV rays. The sun has been beatin’ down like crazy here, and I know that every time I go outside my locks are just getting totally fried. I’m looking forward to testing this out to see how it protects my hair.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner: So. Totally. Excited! I saw that some other girls got this in their box last month, and I definitely had my curiosity piqued. So, I was actually planning on purchasing this with my points at some point. When I opened up my box and saw that this liner was inside, I was absolutely thrilled. I even got it in the color I wanted to try, Olive. I’m not a pro at applying liquid liner, but hopefully with a bit of practice, I’ll get the hang of thing. I swatched a bit on my hand, and after washing some dishes, and some furious rubbing, there wasn’t any smudging. Heck yeah! I couldn’t wait to test it out, so I immediately went and applied some. Forgive the awful bathroom lighting and my terrible skin (I’ve been battling  hormonal acne for months, and it’s just started to finally get better), but here’s a photo of it on the eyes.

Harvey Prince Hello: Another product I’ve been wanting to test out! This has Meyer lemon, white grapefruit, and pink plumeria. I haven’t tested this out since I’ve got another perfume already on, but the notes sound divine. I am definitely looking forward to trying this.

Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum: I’ve got very fair skin (MUFE 110 for reference), and whenever I spend time outside, I go to great lengths to ensure that my skin is protected from the sun. I’ve heard good things about Supergoop!, so I’m curious to see whether or not it actually lives up to the hype. This came with two little packets, and it should be more than enough to get an idea of how the product performs.

Tea Forte Minteas: I got the flavor Cocoa Mate, and they’re umm…interesting. Not bad, not good, just interesting. I’ll probably finish up my tin, but I can’t see myself actually purchasing them.

Birchbox earbuds: I’m terrible about losing tiny earbuds, and my cats are equally terrible about destroying them. Having another pair around is a plus.

Are you a Birchbox subscriber? What’d you get this month? If you’re not subscribed and you’re interested, you can join here!

MAC Heavenly Creature Haul

Before I decided to embark on my P50P, I picked up a couple of items from MAC’s latest collection, Heavenly Creature. The products look absolutely stunning and ethereal in the pan, so if you’re one that is prone to purchasing products on a whim based on how they look in the pan, avoid this at all costs!

I was attracted to some of the brighter, fiercer and more vibrant shades in the collection, but ultimately, I decided to go with colors that weren’t so bold and were much more wearable on my skin tone. There was a bright pink blush that looked stunning, but deeper, more pigmented colors like that tend to take a lot more work in order to not look clownish on my skin, so sadly, that one was left behind.

Finally after much deliberation, I decided on three items. The lipstick in Cut a Caper, the mineralize skinfinish in Light Year, and the mineralize blush in Solar Ray.

Mineralize Skinfinish in Light Year

Lipstick in Cut a Caper

Mineralize Blush in Solar Ray

L-R: Cut a Caper lipstick, Light Year Mineralize Skinfinish, and Solar Ray Mineralize Blush.

Cut a Caper Lipstick: Oh. Emm. Gee. I am in love with this lipstick. It is soft, creamy, applies like a dream, and is hella pigmented. It gives your lips some gorgeous color without being too bright or looking like a bit much. I really hope this one gets repromoted in the future. I would repurchase one (or two) in a heartbeat.

Light Year Mineralize Skinfinish: This is pretty glittery, and I hate super glittery blush. I hate it. BUT. I found that with a little buffing, the glitter vanishes as though it was never there, leaving behind this glorious, totally natural golden, peachy pinky glow. This one works really well as a blush on fairer skin tones, but on deeper gals, it might add a teensy bit of color and a gorgeous sheen. You get a ton of product in the pan and a little goes a long way, so the value is definitely there.

Solar Ray Mineralize Blush: This was suggested to me by the online MAC artist I consulted via chat, and after ordering it, I looked up a lot more swatches and I was kind of uncertain. I was just going to just return it, but I decided to go ahead and give it a swatch. Why the heck not? I ordered it, might as well test it before making any final decisions. Much like Light Year, it is also a glitterbomb. The glitter problem is solved by buffing, and you’re left with a blush that leans much more towards the orange/true peach side of things on my skin. It’s growing on me. I find myself reaching for it a lot, and I’ve found that I do like the glow it gives.

There you have it! A relatively small haul from MAC’s Heavenly Creature Collection. Have you checked this one out? Pick anything up from it? Share your thoughts on it!

Project 50 Pan

About a week ago, I decided to try to organize my bathroom cabinets, drawers, and counters. Things get really messy and disorganized quite quickly, and I do really try my hardest to keep up with things but naturally, that doesn’t always happen. Anyway, during this latest attempt to bring order into the chaos of my bathroom, I found that I have tons and tons of products that have been used quite a bit, but for some reason never actually got finished. They just got shoved back into the darkness of my overcrowded cabinets and drawers halfway through.

So! I want to get through these things. I want more space, I want to be free of excess product, and I want to actually finish things. This is where Project 50 Pan comes in. Until I finish the 50 products on this list, I won’t be buying another thing. It is entirely possible that I might finish products that aren’t on this list, and that’s fine. BUT, in order to consider this challenge totally done, every item on this list has to be completed.

I wanted to clear out products from all across the beauty spectrum, so I chose makeup, skin care, hair care, fragrance, etc. I also put little codes next to them, and FS = full size, DS = deluxe sample, and S = sample. I’ll be posting every few weeks with an update on the products that I’ve used up. I’ll still be doing my monthly empties as a way to clear out the empty bottles, since this project will likely take a few months and I don’t want a bunch of used up stuff hanging around for that long.

And now…the products that made it onto the list!

1. Freeman Papaya and Mango Shampoo, FS
2. Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner, FS
3. Philosophy Vanilla Birthday Cake Shower Gel, DS
